Satellite Telecommunication System Engineer

Inside the SATCOM Business Line Engineering Department in Rome, we are looking for a Satellite Telecommunication System Engineer.

About the job

• As a member of the LoB SATCOM Engineering, you will be supporting activities relating to telecommunications ground and user segment technologies and products.

• You will work in international multidisciplinary teams that apply a ECSS based methodology for the design, development and validation of systems.

• The ideal candidate shall comply with the following requirements:

  • Master Degree in telecommunications engineering;

  • At least 2 years of work experience in the SATCOM field;

  • English (Level B2 minimum);

  • Basic knowledge of satellite bandwidth technologies (iDirect, Hughes, Newtech, Comtech);

  • Knowledge of IP network engineering and holding of relevant technology certifications (e.g. Cisco, Fortinet, Juniper) is considered a plus.

Duties

The selected candidate will be in charge of the following activities:

• Technical management of bids, project and R&D activities;

• Write and decompose system requirements and define the best method for verification;

• Develop architectural designs and models;

• Define and manage interfaces between solution elements;

• Perform scientific analysis to contribute to R&D activities;

• Write technical proposals for customers;

• Create, manage and control design documentation (ICDs, TRSs, SSDD) as well as associated solution baselines.

• Troubleshoot the system design and provide suggestions or solutions;

• Provide L3 support to customers;

• Identify and define ground segment product and technology needs for future satellite communication services;

• Provide High Level and Low Level Design documentation.

Education and Seniority

• Master degree in STEM disciplines, with preference to telecommunication engineering;

• At least 2 years of work experience in the SATCOM field desiderable;

• Good knowledge of the English language is required (Level B2 minimum).

Technical skills and IT tools:

• Experience in engineering of complex systems and solutions;

• Knowledge of ECSS space programme design, development, verification, validation, and integration processes;

• Understanding of core networking concepts and protocols such as Ethernet, IPv4, IPv6, DHCP, NAT, NTP, IPsec VPN, etc.;

• Understanding of routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, IS-IS;

• Knowledge of routing technologies (such as MPLS, SD-WAN, SATCOM, etc) and WAN architectures;

•  Knowledge of satellite communications systems architecture and technologies;

• Capability to understand a link budget analysis for systems in GEO orbit (knowledge of modulation techniques and processes/elements in the end-to-end link);

• Knowledge of satellite baseband technology like, Hughes Jupiter, iDirect, Comtech or Newtech will be considered a plus.

Additional requirements:

• Availability for business trips;

• Experience with IBM DOORS for requirements management (nice to have);

• Knowledge of Model Based System Engineering practices and tools, such as Arcadia Capella for MBSE System Engineering Methodology (nice to have);

• Previous experience in R&D activities for Italian and European institutions, such as ASI, ESA, UE will be considered as an asset.
