Within the GCAP Joint Venture, in the GCAP Technical Leadership UO, we are looking for a Solution Architect (End User) for GCAP HQ in Reading (UK).
The Solution Architect (End User) is responsible for designing, building, maintaining, and enhancing End User Computing capabilities (e.g., workstations, laptops, printers, virtual desktops, virtual machine images).
Operating under the Product Owner (End User) and in close collaboration with delivery, architecture, and security teams, this role ensures that end users to efficiently perform their tasks and business operations without heavy reliance on the IT department.
The Solution Architect will design, implement, and monitor solutions that empower end users to efficiently and securely access the tools, applications, and systems that enhance productivity, enable flexible work models, and are aligned with enterprise standards and compliance requirements.
Key Capability Accountabilities and Objectives
- Design scalable and secure End User Computing solutions, such as virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), endpoint management, and collaboration tools.
- Evaluate and select appropriate End User Computing technologies (e.g., VMware Horizon, Citrix, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace).
- Design security frameworks to protect endpoints, applications, and data from cyber threats.
- Implement identity and access management (IAM), encryption, and endpoint protection solutions.
- Provide solutions that enable end users to access tools and applications seamlessly and efficiently.
- Provide hands-on architectural guidance to engineering and operations teams during design, build, and deployment phases.
- Act as a key liaison between Product Owners, Technical Leads, Cybersecurity, and Enterprise Architects to ensure hosting solutions address functional and non-functional requirements.
- Establish monitoring frameworks for End User Computing solutions to ensure optimal performance and reliability to optimize End User Computing environments for cost efficiency and scalability.
- Participate in incident response and problem resolution related to End User Computing, ensuring root causes are addressed in future designs.
- Create and maintain documentation for solution designs, technical standards, and best practices to share knowledge with team members and stakeholders.

- Ensure end users can access tools and applications seamlessly, securely, and efficiently.
- Enable remote and hybrid work models by implementing technologies such as VDI and cloud-based systems.
- Implement scalable and cost-effective End User Computing solutions to reduce infrastructure overhead, optimising resource usage and licensing to minimize expenses.

Essential Skills and Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in solution architecture with a strong focus on End User Computing (e.g., End User Computing Architect, VDI Engineer, or Endpoint Management Specialist)
- Proficiency in tools like Microsoft Intune, VMware Workspace ONE, SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager), or Jamf for managing devices and endpoints
- Experience with Microsoft Teams, Slack, Google Workspace, Zoom, or other collaboration platforms
- Understanding of technologies like Citrix Virtual Apps, VMware App Volumes, or Microsoft Azure App Services
- Experience designing and deploying End User Computing solutions, such as virtual desktops, endpoint management, and collaboration platforms
- Hands-on experience with VDI platforms (e.g., VMware Horizon, Citrix Virtual Apps) and endpoint management tools (e.g., Intune, Workspace ONE)
- Experience migrating legacy systems to modern End User Computing platforms (e.g., transitioning from on-premises to cloud-based VDI solutions)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- High ethical standards when handling confidential information
Desiderable Skills and Experience:
- VMware Certified Professional – Desktop and Mobility (VCP-DTM)
- Citrix Certified Professional – Virtualization (CCP-V)
- Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate or similar
- TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) and related certifications
- Experience working within industries requiring robust security and compliance (e.g., Aerospace & Defence, Financial Services)
- Experience implementing cloud-based End User Computing solutions, such as Azure Virtual Desktop or AWS WorkSpaces
- Experience managing costs related to End User Computing infrastructure, including licensing and cloud resource usage
- Proficiency in scripting languages like PowerShell, Python, or Bash for automating End User Computing processes
